Special Screening
‘Tero Saarinen – Jean Sibelius: Kullervo’

Presented by YLE – The Finnish Broadcasting Company

The internationally acclaimed Finnish choreographer Tero Saarinen directs a chef d’œuvre of Finnish music, KULLERVO, a symphonic poem by Jean Sibelius. Written for chorus and orchestra and first performed in Helsinki in 1892, KULLERVO describes the tragic tale of Finland’s mythic hero. In 2015, as the musical world celebrated the 150th anniversary of Finland’s greatest composer, Tero Saarinen created his very contemporary and visually stunning stage version of this iconic work of Finnish culture. Saarinen’s compelling interpretation forges together the dancers of the Finnish National Ballet and Tero Saarinen Company with music performed by the FNO orchestra, choir and soloists as well as the Helsinki Philharmonic Chorus.
